The flute studio at the Sunderman Conservatory provides a vibrant, energetic, and nurturing environment for students on their personal journeys as musicians. My teaching emphasizes the discipline and attention to detail necessary to become a fine musician, always infused with humor and instilling the abundant joys of flute playing and music-making.

Each student develops a Personal Performance Plan spanning their four-year course of study that includes technical and musical goals, repertoire to be studied, performance expectations for solo work as well as chamber music and large ensemble participation. As students progress, they are encouraged to perform in competitions both on and off campus and to attend as many musical concerts and conferences as possible.

Students learn musicianship skills and technical mastery of the flute, always working with their individual goals in mind. We begin by securing the fundamental techniques of flute playing, such as tone, articulation, breathing, phrasing, technique and continue forward to focus attention on sustained growth and improvement in these areas as well as expressivity, musicianship and knowledge of the flute repertoire. Students are continually asked to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of their own performance, developing the critical thinking and listening skills necessary to analyze and improve their own practice sessions and performances.

One of the most important aspects of our work together is the weekly flute studio class.  I never cease to be amazed at how much students learn from one another, how genuinely supportive of one another’s performance they are and yet how they challenge each other to do better.  Students truly flourish in this class.

Flutists are able to perform in masterclasses taught by guest artists several times each year.  In addition, work with bodymapping and flute choir repertoire are all a part of the work we do in the each week.  Flutists of all ages are encouraged to become a part of my studio through private study.  Contact me for more details.
